The fervor over the drug Zofran being linked to birth defects has not died down as its maker, Glaxo Smith Kline (GSK), likely hoped. The anti-nausea drug was promoted amongst the medical community as a great drug for use after anesthesia or chemotherapy treatment for nausea, but also in pregnant women to combat morning sickness. This marketing to the unsuspecting woman with child was done by GSK even though the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) did not approve it for that particular use. Now the first of the Zofran lawsuits has been filed by a Massachusetts mom who gave birth in 2000 to a daughter with birth defects that have led to the need for ten surgeries throughout the girl’s life. This mom was prescribed Zofran in her first trimester to combat morning sickness, but her daughter has thus suffered birth defects that have significantly kept her from normal development and a normal life.
